The fall of Emperor Less - featuring Lee Thompson & Gil Sharone Charity Single
This week we were contacted by David King to tell us about his exceptional project. This is exactly the type of initiative that The Specialized Project strives to support.
I asked Dave to describe what he’s doe and this is his inspiring reply.
I decided late winter 2017 to create a single release in aid of mental health and
youth music charities. Due to my ongoing battle with depression, I find being productive and having the freedom to express myself is not only # form of escapism but, it is #lso #
positive creative outlet.
The charity release entitled ‘The Fall of Emperor Lessʼ is essentially about the fall of a higher power and a metaphor for overcoming the everyday struggles of mental health. The composition was not created in my usual style, however, the finished result in its alternative offbeat reggae form, definitely helped deliver the message with its strong lyrical content and overall powerful delivery and sense of unity.
To help raise the profile of the charity release, i decided it would be great opportunity to engage with idols of mine #and It was an #absolute privilege #and honour to get to work closely with world renowned LA session drummer Gil Sharone (+44, Fishbone, Dillinger Escape Plan) and the famous overblown tenor growls of Lee Thompson (Madness, Lee Thompsons Ska Orchestra) As well as trumpeter Steve White and trombonist Julian Rodic (Lee Thompsonʼs Ska Orchestra).
I also enlisted help and guidance from friends and colleagues here in the North east, acts such as powerhouse vocalist Jen Cherene (Karma Heart, Alcatraz House Band) the woodwind section of progressive horror outfit Spooky Jeffersons Ideal Lunchbox, local Illustrator Dean Morley and the overwhelming generosity of Blast Recording Studios, all of which helped bring the composition to life.
The sense of camaraderie was paramount throughout the release and I was overwhelmed with the help I received from the region #and from the special guests, I will always be forever grateful for everyone involved and who helped bring the composition from its raw home studio demo format to this fantastic single release for such a worthy cause.
Mental illness is a growing issue among all classes, races and ages, there is no escaping its grasp and it affects everyone in some way. My aim is to get people conversing #and diminish the stigma which surrounds it, and of course to fundraise for fantastic organisations MIND, THE SAMARITANS and TONIC. (All proceeds will be going to charity)
