‘Nu Ska’. These are compilations of original songs by ska/rocksteady bands from around the world. We hope that these comps will become established series that showcases the great music from the international ska community.
Confirmed to appear on the first Volume are
The Melbourne Ska Orchestra
Formed in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia and assembled from some of Australia’s preeminent names in Ska and Reggae and fronted by inimitable frontman Nicky Bomba (Bomba, Bustamento, John Butler Trio), the soaring popularity of the band is seeing the MSO fast becoming a fixture of Australia’s musical landscape.
The Silencerz Feat with Lee Thompson
The Silencerz are a ska/reggae big band made up of 9 North London musicians, occasionally performing with Lee Thompson, renowned ‘Madness’ saxophonist as special guest.
J. Navarro & the Traitors
J. Navarro & the Traitors began as a conversation between Jay Navarro (The Suicide Machines, Break Anchor, Hellmouth) and Eric Abbey (1592) about music that they had always played and never played together. From sharing the stage together in the early 1990s and 2000s they wanted to write and play music that they loved. So they took the idea and started writing, focusing on the reggae and Two-Tone sound that had been missing from the Detroit scene.
The Cartoon Violence sound is an insanely catchy affair that mixes super bouncy 2 tone ska with distinctly British sounding pop & indie stylings. Their songs capture the classic Brit Pop storytelling vibe of the likes of The Kinks, Madness, Squeeze, The Hotknives & Parklife-era Blur, with each tune lyrically being like a mini kitchen sink drama in its own right! Endless soaring energy, great sing-a-long choruses & wonderful piano/organ melodies are all hallmarks of the band’s unique ska sound.
As well as generating funds for worthy causes like the Teenage Cancer Trust, Youth Music and Tonic Music for Mental Health, we hope that Nu Ska will support the international ska community and help it to grow. The world is full of amazing new music made by exceptional musicians and the world of ska is a vibrant mix of both traditional and new styles. Nu Ska will bring these new classics of ska to one series of compilations. It will also by away of enabling us to thank and support so many great bands that have helped us to achieve what we have.
We are want to hear from bands that would like to appear on Nu Ska, though the album will consist of what we feel are the best current singles available now. We’re currently compiling the first volume with a view to releasing it very soon
