About The Specialized Project

Specialized is a musical community that was created in 2012 to raise funds to improve the lives of teens and young adults with cancer or who are living in difficult circumstances.

Specialized brings together amateur and professional musicians with the shared goal of creating musical projects to raise funds for cancer research and support agencies, particularly The Teenage Cancer Trust and now The National Foundation for Youth Music. This has been achieved by the production of themed albums supported by live music events across the UK. To date we have released five compilation albums and string of singles. As well as encouraging the production of musical releases by artists supporting our aims Initially working within the genres of reggae and ska music we now embrace musicians from across the world of many musical styles. Specialized is very aware of how musicians are often pressured to donate their time to charities sometimes to unmanageable extents and it’s with this in mind we’ve strived to create a positive community that supports those who have given so generously to us.

We offer artists our platform to promote their own works through Specialized Records, Specialized Radio and Specialized Booking as well as offering free consultation and support for their own events and recording.

We have a dedicated team of musicians and music industry workers that devote substantial amounts of their own time without reward. They include project and events management specialists, musicians, artists, producers, promoters, marketing and web design professionals. You can find more about our team Click here

Our story begins…

Specialized was first conceived in September 2011. Paul Williams had been working very closing with UK ska pioneers The Specials and has written two books that follows the bands history. Williams saw a TV programme about the care of young people on the NHS and The Specials themselves had recently played a prestigious gig at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of the charity Teenage Cancer Trust so Paul put his love of The Specials together with the idea of somehow doing a charity project to raise money for TCT. The idea was to create a charity album of Specials covers by modern day artists. The album drew from a wide spectrum of musical genre. Thus “Specialized- A Modern take on Specials classics”. The project took off at an alarming speed. Names such as Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals) and Lee Thompson (Madness) became involved, a 40 track double CD evolved, with album artwork by original 2-Tone designer John Teflon Sims plus sleeve notes by Horace Panter & Lynval Golding of The Specials. A twenty date tour around the UK (including a superb one off special in Australia-Thanks to Chris McKenzie)took off with 5 dates selling out. The tour was a great success and ended with the first of our now annual Ska& Reggae festival ‘the Big One’.

Two vinyl 7″ EPs were also released along with a limited edition white vinyl album and the project continued to grow and grow. Yes, the Specialized with a “Z”, it was an intentional spelling- it simply was more striking cosmetically!

Each year we’ve continued to follow this format by paying tribute to The Beat, Madness and The Clash, attracting artist contributions from around the world building an international community of likeminded people. Specialized is a progressive organisation and very open to new ideas and suggestions.
